Stripe Connect Integration Guide: Handling Escrow Payments in Marketplaces
A technical guide to implementing Stripe Connect Custom accounts for secure escrow payments, platform fees, and automated 1099 tax reporting.

The Payment Dilemma for Two-Sided Marketplaces

If you are building a marketplace (like Upwork or Airbnb), you are not just selling a product—you are facilitating a transaction between two strangers. This requires Escrow.

If a homeowner pays a plumber $500 through your platform, you cannot legally hold that $500 in your startup's primary corporate bank account while waiting for the job to finish. Doing so turns your startup into an unlicensed money transmitter, violating federal financial regulations.

The solution? Stripe Connect. At DevApps Technology, Stripe Connect is our default payment architecture for all custom marketplace builds in the USA.

1. Choosing the Right Stripe Connect Account Type

Stripe offers three ways to onboard your sellers/providers:

  1. Standard Accounts: The provider signs up on Stripe's UI and connects to your platform. It’s easy to build, but you have zero control over their checkout experience.
  2. Express Accounts: Stripe hosts the onboarding, but it’s co-branded with your startup's logo. Good for gig-economy apps.
  3. Custom Accounts (White-Label): The gold standard for enterprise platforms. The provider never knows "Stripe" exists. You collect their banking and KYC data natively inside your app's UI, and pass it to Stripe via API.

We almost exclusively build using Custom Accounts to ensure a seamless, branded user experience.

2. Architecting the Escrow Flow (Separate Charges and Transfers)

To facilitate escrow (holding funds until a job is marked "Complete"), we implement Stripe's Separate Charges and Transfers flow.

Step 1: The Authorization

When a customer books a service, we don't capture the funds immediately. We create a PaymentIntent and place a hold (authorization) on their credit card.

const paymentIntent = await stripe.paymentIntents.create({
  amount: 50000, // $500.00
  currency: 'usd',
  payment_method_types: ['card'],
  capture_method: 'manual', // THIS IS CRITICAL FOR ESCROW
});

Step 2: The Capture (Funds in Escrow)

Once the provider accepts the job, we capture the funds. The money moves from the customer's credit card into your Stripe Platform Account balance (which acts as the escrow holding pen).

Step 3: The Transfer & Platform Fee

When the customer clicks "Job Complete" in your Next.js frontend, our Node.js webhook triggers a Transfer. We send $425 to the Provider's Connected Account and keep $75 as the Platform Application Fee.

const transfer = await stripe.transfers.create({
  amount: 42500, // $425.00 goes to provider
  currency: "usd",
  destination: "acct_1HxyzPROVIDER_ID",
});
// The remaining $75 stays in your platform balance!

3. KYC and Automated 1099 Tax Reporting

By using Stripe Connect Custom accounts, Stripe handles all the heavy legal lifting.

  • KYC (Know Your Customer): Stripe's API automatically verifies the provider's SSN/EIN and government ID before allowing payouts to prevent fraud and money laundering.
  • 1099 Tax Forms: At the end of the year, Stripe automatically generates and mails IRS 1099-K tax forms to any provider who earned over the federal reporting threshold on your platform.
